🐺 They sold their last company to Roche. Now they're hiring for the next one.

Plus a spatial AI company launching new products, and two out-of-town companies setting up shop in San Diego.

Frank Westermann and Anton Kittelberger sold mySugr to Roche. Since 2020 they've been building 9amHealth, a virtual cardiometabolic clinic in San Diego. They closed a $26M Series B in May.

Plus Looq AI, a spatial AI company turning field walks into 3D infrastructure models. And Protogon Research, a 7-person AI research team in San Diego that posted its 4th open role this week.

And we added two out-of-town companies building their SD footprint.

Howl yeah, let's dive in.

9amHealth - 17 Open Roles

Virtual clinic delivered through employer benefits. Diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and hypertension in one platform.

Why they matter:

Most cardiometabolic conditions are managed one at a time. 9amHealth combines them into one whole-body care experience for employees.

  • The $26M Series B in May was led by Define Ventures, with SemperVirens VC, Catalio Capital, and NewHealth Ventures participating.

  • Product expansion beyond diabetes and obesity into hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

  • 17 open roles across the platform, including one in-office role in Encinitas - the same role type we spotlighted two weeks ago.

Founded 2020 in San Diego.

Open roles across:

  • Clinical (Health Coaches, Telehealth Physicians, RDs)

  • Product Engineering and Design

  • Data Engineering and Analytics

  • Office & Workplace Experience (in-office Encinitas)

  • All 17 open roles

Looq AI - 9 Open SD Roles

Spatial AI for infrastructure. Field crews walk a site, software returns a survey-grade 3D point cloud.

Why they matter:

Utility and infrastructure work depends on accurate site data. Looq's platform turns handheld video into deliverables engineers and designers can work from.

  • In February, Looq launched qPole, an AI-enabled utility-pole modeling product.

  • Named to the 2026 Constructech Top Products Award and 2026 DTECH Power Players.

  • Compatible with Trimble Business Center. Distributed in the US Southwest by AllTerra Central.

  • Hosted their first user conference in La Jolla in May.

Founded 2021 in San Diego by CEO Dominique Meyer (PhD) and CTO Shreyas Niradi. $3.75M raised, with BootstrapLabs, Longley Capital, and Spatial Capital.

Open roles across:

  • Software Engineering (Deep Learning, Backend, Front-End, Systems)

  • Product and Customer Success

  • Business Development

  • Electromechanical Assembly

  • All 9 open SD roles

Protogon Research - 4 Open SD Roles

Research team training and monetizing AI systems through proprietary trading.

Why they matter:

Protogon's bet: financial markets provide clear feedback and real consequences. Progress is measurable, weaknesses surface immediately, and trading revenue funds continued research.

  • 7-person team with 4 open roles

  • Founder Rafael Cosman previously co-founded TrustToken (A16Z-backed stablecoin). Before that, ML engineer at Google Brain.

  • Team drawn from Stanford, UC San Diego, and Caltech.

Founded 2023 in San Diego.
